چکیده

To what extent do people care about the intentions behind an action? What if the intentions can be deceptive? We conducted two experiments to complement previous evidence about the roles of outcomes and intentions in economic games. The results of Experiment 1 indicate that both outcomes and intentions affect players’ responses. Moreover, unkind intentions are punished but kind intentions are hardly rewarded. In Experiment 2, intentions are stated as opposed to observed. Participants misstate their intentions frequently, thereby undermining the credibility of the statements. As a result, perceived honesty modulates players’ responses.

An Empirical Study of Peer Influence on User Attitudes, Behavior, and Performance

User attitudes, behavior, and performance have been studied by many researchers, yet we do not have a very complete understanding of their determinants. Word-of-mouth communication is described in this study as one potelitially powerful influence on those outcomes. A deception experiment tested the effects of word-of-mouth communication on novices engaged in a learning task. It was hypothesized...

Betrayal of Intentions in 2-Player Games⇤

We introduce communication and with it the ability to deceive other players about a player’s own intentions into the standard model of 2-player strategic form games. Communication facilitates “commitment” that expands the set of equilibrium outcomes of the game. We show that successful costly deception may arise in equilibrium despite the inherent tension between successful costly deception and...

Prosocial lies: When deception breeds trust

Philosophers, psychologists, and economists have long asserted that deception harms trust. We challenge this claim. Across four studies, we demonstrate that deception can increase trust. Specifically, prosocial lies increase the willingness to pass money in the trust game, a behavioral measure of benevolence-based trust. In Studies 1a and 1b, we find that altruistic lies increase trust when dec...

Detecting deception in a bluffing body: the role of expertise.

Studies of deception detection traditionally have focused on verbal communication. Nevertheless, people commonly deceive others through nonverbal cues. Previous research has shown that intentions can be inferred from the ways in which people move their bodies. Furthermore, motor expertise within a given domain has been shown to increase visual sensitivity to other people's movements within that...
